Late last year we posted an article which spoke about the possibility of the Google Chrome web browsing coming to the PlayStation 3, now almost six months later we are beginning to hear more, which got us thinking, will Chrome be there when the PlayStation Network returns?

There's a couple of ways to do it: 1. Download the theme file to an external drive or card and use it to transfer the file to your PS3 if your PS3 has that capability, or 2. Use the PS3's browser.

A recent article posted on GizmoCrunch suggests that leaked code found in PS3 WebKit source code hinted that Sony’s console may be getting its own fully functional Chrome web browser, now we are wondering if this will be rolled out with the new firmware update which will hit the PS3 when the PSN is back online.

There are a few reasons why this is a good idea, firstly in terms of security Google Chrome has a solid reputation and regarded as unhackable by many (which is great news following such a high-profile security breach), also the downtime has given developers plenty of time to work on the software to ensure that when it hits the network it is as good as it can be.

We are sure that when Sony switch the PlayStation Network back on they will be heavily promoting what changes have been made, a fresh new web browser will undoubtedly be another great feature to talk about and will allow people to have a richer web browsing experience on their HDTVs.

We have some exciting details for PS3 owners now, as rumors are circulating that the PS3 console will be upgraded with a Google Chrome browser in the future. The rumors have even caused Google to issue a swift response to the claims.

The news has surfaced from Dutch site PS3Life.NL as they have discovered that Sony has updated their PS3 browser webkit source files, with some information that relates to the Google Chrome browser, as detailed on NeoGaf forums here.

It’s not much to go on yet, but apparently it’s still enough for Google to issue a quick response to PS3Center. Rather than just issue a standard ‘we do not comment on rumor and speculation’ like Sony would, they decided to tease us further with the following comment:

“I’m afraid we have nothing to announce at this time.”

Could we have stumbled on an announcement which is actually planned for Sony’s press conference at E3 2011? It would be fantastic if the PS3 did get Chrome as it’s default browser, as PS3 users will openly admit that the current browser isn’t really up to standard and could be improved considerably.
